Young Women Activity : Project Runway Challenge

Last night we had such a fun young women activity that I thought I would share!
I did a similar activity in my previous ward that you can read about here!

This time around I decided to add a little to the activity including "mad libs" and "challenge categories"!
It was such a blast and we all shared a lot of laughs!

I have created some fun printables to go along with the activity!
Feel free to share and use any ideas!

You can download a PDF copy of the printables by clicking on the links below.
I only provide PDF files, as the quality is much better for printing purposes
and I prefer the integrity of the designs not be changed or altered. Thanks for your understanding!

THE MODESTY CHALLENGE
HOW IT WORKED
We started by splitting the young women into five teams.
Each girl selected a bag which contained random supplies inside
and a "challenge category" (see categories below) taped to the front of the bag.

(some of the random supplies included tissue paper, toilet paper, die-cuts, paper plates,
streamers, ribbon, garbage bags, markers, etc.)

The girls had 30 minutes to design a head to toe MODEST ensemble inspired by their "challenge category".
Depending on the size of the team they had to make either 1 or 2 modest ensembles.
The girls quickly worked together to make their modest visions a reality!
We had five different categories for each of the teams (as seen above)!
At the beginning of the activity I had printed off these cards and stuck them to the front of white paper bags
that contained all of the random materials the girls would be using to make their modest designs!

THE MODESTY CHALLENGE
MAD LIBS & FASHION SHOW
Also in each bag was a "mad lib" for their category that they had to fill out for their design.
After the girls had completed their "looks" and filled out their category "mad libs", they walked the runway!

As the girls modeled and showed off their modest designs we would read the "mad libs".
The mad libs gave a description of the girl's masterpiece!
Some of them turned out super funny and we definitely all got a laugh!

Each category had it's own "mad lib" and two possible descriptions
(had two descriptions in case a group was making two dresses - again depended on the size of the team).
The girls filled out the blanks prior to the runway show,
and we read the descriptions as they walked down the runway.

This is just a simple printable poster that I hung on the board above the bags at the beginning of the activity.

THE MODESTY CHALLENGE
SPIRITUAL THOUGHT
At the end of the activity, we cam together for a couple minutes and I shared a spiritual thought on modesty.
My thought was based on the talk given by Sister Dalton found here
We sent home this small treat with the girls as a reminder of the activity and the importance of modesty!
The handout was a small bag of starbursts and a handout titled "Arise and SHINE" (see below)

Come Follow Me: The Atonement in Trials

I was so glad I was able to catch up on reading some of the "Come Follow Me" lesson outlines today.
I was especially touched as I read over the lesson,

Feel free to print off , share, and use for your lessons!

I have created a couple fun handouts and lesson helps to spark some inspiration!

I loved reading THIS talk from Elder Cook.
I think it is such a great reminders that one of the greatest blessings we can receive from
the Atonement of Jesus Christ is personal peace in our lives - especially during our trials
What a sweet reminder.
Above is a simple quote from Elder Cook's talk from General Conference.

One of the suggestions from the lesson is to give the girls each a sheet of paper.
Give them the opportunity to write down one of their current trials.
I created a simple handout the young women could write down their thoughts.
They could either fill out ways the atonement can help them during class as they listen to the lesson
or even take it home to ponder and fill out at a later time.

Come Follow Me: Repentance

Today I took some time to read the "Come Follow Me" lesson outline for March titled,

This has always been one of my scriptures.
Sometimes I think repentance can sound like an intimidating thing.
We have done something wrong that needs to be made right.

I love reading this scripture because I think it illustrates how personal repentance is.
Even when we are broken we can turn to our Savior.
He is kind... he is loving... he waits with open arms.
What a sweet reminder of how we can become perfected through Christ and His Atonement.

This has always been one of my favorite talks from Elder Andersen.
Again, he shows how repentance can be such a healing process.
Above is a bookmark with one of my favorite quotes from his talk about repentance.

One of the suggestions from the lesson is to complete
VALUE EXPERIENCE - VIRTUE #4
from personal progress.

I created a simple card the girls could write down ways they could repent
and improve their lives.

Come Follow Me: Forgiveness

I have spending a lot of time with family this past month,
so I am a little behind on new handouts and ideas for the month.
They will be coming to you slowly throughout the week so keep an eye out!

This morning I was reading up and studying the "Come Follow Me" lesson outline,

Feel free to print off , share, and use for your lessons!

I have created a couple fun handouts and lesson helps to spark some inspiration!

So I'll admit, when I read this talk from President Uchtdorf,
I kept thinking of the cute song title, from "Frozen" - "Let it Go".
Ya call me crazy...
Anyways, that is what really inspired these handouts!

Above are simple logos that could be made into stickers, magnets, etc.
as a handout for the young women and a reminder of the importance of forgiveness in their lives!

Young Women Valentines Day Card: You Are Loved

As a presidency, we decided we wanted to use Valentines Day
as another special day to let our young women know that they are loved!

We decided that we are going to give them each a card with a heartfelt message in it
from each of us as their young women leaders.
We are going to pair the card with a cute little treat and deliver it to the girls on valentines day!

The card itself is really simple because we really wanted to focus on the messages of love!
Below are downloads for the card front design!
You could either keep the cards really simple like we did, or spruce them up as your heart desires!

I have made two different versions of the valentine!
One is specifically for your young women.
The second is a  more generic one that could come from any other organization
(IE: relief society presidency, visiting teacher, etc.)

I hope you enjoy sharing a little extra valentine love this holiday with a heartfelt note!

Come Follow Me: Why do choices matter?

This morning I was reading up and studying the "Come Follow Me" lesson outline,

Feel free to print off , share, and use for your lessons!

I have loved reading up on the different talks and scripture references!
I have created a couple fun handouts and lesson helps to spark some inspiration!

So I saw these fortune cookies awhile ago on pinterest, and I just thought they were stinkin cute!
I thought they would be such a fun little handout for this lesson topic!

PDF download of the handout (4 to a page)

I really loved this talk from Elder Nelson.
I love how stresses the importance of the decisions we make today and how they determine our "destiny".
Above is a simple handout with four patterns for fortune cookies with an insert from Elder Nelson's talk!

You can find the details on how to assemble the fortune cookies here

PDF download of the handout (6 to a page)

Above is the statement that goes along with the YW Value, Choice & Accountability.
I love it clearly explains our belief on agency.
The handout above could either be paired with a fortune cookie as a reminder of how our choices determine
our "fortune", or could be given without the fortune cookie as a reminder of the YW value, Choice & Accountiblity.

Diamonds in the Rough: Come Unto Christ and be Perfected in Him

Last night we held our New Beginnings program.
It turned out awesome and I thought I would share some of our ideas!

We decided on the theme,
"DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH;
COME UNTO CHRIST & BE PERFECTED IN HIM"

Honestly, it was such a special night - one I hope the girls will always remember.
The spirit was definitely present as we focused on the worth of each individual girl
and the blessings of participating in the young women program!

We decided to give the decorations a "tiffanys" feel - (to incorporate the "diamond" theme).
It turned out adorbs.
Super simple and SO cute! You can see all the details in the slew of pictures below!

As a party favor, we made each of the girls their own "Tiffany's" diamond ring box.
Inside we included a giant (plastic) diamond ring.
Attached to the box we included a copy of the the 2014 mutual theme!

Not only were the decorations super cute,
but I think we all went home feeling filled with the spirit and a great love from our Heavenly Father.

Some of the highlights from the program included:

"HOW TO MAKE A DIAMOND"
We were enlightened by our YW 1st counselor as she described the process of creating a diamond.
She related the analogy to the YW and  explained how they were each "diamonds in the rough".
She emphasized how through trials and faith in Jesus Christ
we become gradually more pure and more perfected - just like a diamond.

"THE SPARKLE & SHINE OF PERSONAL PROGRESS:
PARENTS & YW WORKING TOGETHER"
We know that in the church, families are central.
As YW leaders, we are there to support the families...never replace them!
We decided to learn together about how the personal progress experience can be enhanced as parents
and families get involved in helping their young woman work to achieve their goals.
(there is some great information on that here and here)

We decided to invite three different mothers of the YW in our ward to briefly talk.
They each described ways they had been able to get involved in the
pp program and discuss blessings they had seen as they helped their daughter.

It was so special and tender to hear the parent's perspective of the personal progress program.
Obviously, it is not always easy to work with our teenagers,
(one mother even mentioned that sometimes their night would end in tears -
and not always happy ones ha ha - isn't it the truth!?)
But each of the parents also expressed how it had blessed their relationships with their daughters
(and their families as a whole!) as they helped their young women strive to accomplish her goals.

It was a wonderful reminder that as the young women work towards completing their personal progress,
and they receive support from their parents, leaders, and families,
they can learn now how to strengthen their homes NOW.

"DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH"
Our YW president wrapped up the night by speaking to the young women about the
New Beginnings and Mutual theme for the year.

The spirit filled the room as she talked about the worth of each young woman.
She used the example of Peter and his growth as he learned from the Savior and compared that
to each young woman in the room.

It was very touching as she expressed her love for the girls as well as the Savior's love for them.
She described how we might each be a little "rough around the edges", but the Savior is there to help with that.
He is there to "perfect" us.

She also left a couple challenges with the girls.
First- To gain their own a testimony NOW.
Second - Once they have that testimony and understand their worth, INVITE OTHERS.

We have quite a few girls who do not attend young women,
and she stressed the importance of us working together as friends to help those other young women to "Come Unto Christ".

It was a great message and I think we all walked away feeling motivated to do just a little better!

Here are a few of the images we used for decorations during the night!

I really loved this talk from Russell M. Nelson.
Death can be seem like such an unknown and scary thing for a lot of people,
but Elder Nelson clearly explains that it does not have to be!
We know so much about what happens after this life thanks to modern day revelation!
I love his in depth explanation of the Plan of Salvation and how we can
find comfort and peace even when we lose someone who is near and dear to us.
I was really inspired by his closing remarks and created the handout above because of it!

PDF download of the handout (4 to a page)

I just love this scripture. I think it is such a great reminder, that even in the most trying of times,
we can always find peace from our Savior.
As we encounter a loss in our lives, what a great reminder of always turning to Jesus Christ for comfort.
